This town is falling apart.
Welcome to Portsford, a seaside town fighting a losing battle with coastal erosion. When a sudden announcement threatens to tear the community apart, in an attempt to raise spirits, everyone comes together for a night of drinking and dancing. But as the party becomes a pressure cooker, difficult conversations surrounding shared loss of home, and collective and individual responsibility rise to the surface. But wouldn't you rather just dance the night away?
Our show is inspired by the UK’s disappearing coastline and draws from our research into affected communities in East Anglia. FREAK OUT! experiments with theatrical styles and genres, blending dark comedy, movement, live art and multimedia with an issue-led narrative into an entertaining, high-energy cocktail of a show. Enjoy it while it lasts, because things are about to get messy... literally.
FREAK OUT! draws attention to how climate change will affect those on the periphery of society who are often overlooked. Our show stimulates important conversations around activism, climate anxiety, and ultimately what we owe to each other as a community in times of crisis.
"celebrates the beauty of the coast and laments its loss ... half love letter, half mourning song, FREAK OUT! combines physical comedy and slapstick with an issue-led narrative that peels back the irreparable damage of climate change” ★★★★★ Broadway World
"captures the spectrum of optimism to nihilism in the face of climate disaster. A poetically playful and creatively choreographed moment for reflection and call to action" ★★★★ Fringe Biscuit
Coin Toss Collective are a theatre company who write, direct and devise our plays together collaboratively. We ‘coined’ our name in a fluke moment - when trying to decide (and disagreeing!) between two other options, one of our members suggested that we toss a coin! We believe this reflects our approach to theatre-making - playful, endlessly curious, unconventional, and open to unexpected moments which take our work into unexpected territory. We make unique, offbeat theatre which not only seeks to thrill and entertain, but also challenges and subverts traditional frameworks of storytelling to explore both the joys and deep-seated issues of the modern world we live in.
