Bring Back Chainmail

Bring Back Chainmail tells the story of James, a boy who escapes the painful reality of a world without his mother by living the fantasy life of a mediaeval knight. With the help of Sophie, a loyal friend who masquerades as Bard the non-verbal jester, James transforms his bedroom into a royal court where our audience become the lords, ladies and peasants of his imaginary realm. But despite the merriment of tourney games and jovial jigs, Ser James is haunted by the absence of his missing Queen.

Meanwhile, frustrated by his son’s behaviour, Dave struggles to navigate this imaginary kingdom where his lost love Laura always seems to loom large. Slowly Sophie guides him on a journey from lowly manservant to the heroic King Dave in the hope that imagination can reunite a kingdom and heal a family. Think Don Quixote meets The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time with comedy, clowning and audience participation to tell a gentle story about loss, love and the healing power of imagination.

Aimed at children and sympathetic adults, the play is about a child coping with loss.
It has been developed to be more inclusive for neurodiverse audience and all performances of Bring Back Chainmail are designed to be 'relaxed'. The character Bard also uses Makaton signs at various moments in the show to reflect and include to non-speaking audience members.
