Arthur (Josh O’Connor), a down-at-heel British archaeologist just released from prison for misappropriating artefacts, soon falls back in with a ragtag gang of petty thieves, or tomboroli, who plunder Etruscan tombs in the Italian countryside and sell the results to a mysterious figure called Spartaco. Arthur is also grieving for his lost love, and revisits her palatial but decaying home where he encounters her mother (Isabella Rossellini) and housekeeper Italia (Carol Duarte).
